Clarence William Nelson dit Bill Nelson (né le 29 septembre 1942) est un homme politique américain, sénateur démocrate de la Floride au Congrès des États-Unis depuis 2001. Il fut le second parlementaire américain à voyager dans l'espace, à bord de la navette spatiale Columbia.

Biographie

Il est diplômé de Yale en 1965, officier de réserve de 1965 à 1971 (en service actif de 1968 à 1970) et diplômé en droit de l'université de Virginie en 1968.

De 1972 à 1979, ce juriste est député à la chambre des représentants de Floride.

De 1979 à 1991, il est un élu de Floride à la Chambre des Représentants des États-Unis.

En 1990, il se présente aux primaires démocrates pour le poste de gouverneur de Floride mais est battu par Lawton Chiles. Imprudemment, Nelson avait mené campagne en pointant l'âge et la santé de Chiles, dans un état au fort électorat de retraités et de personnes âgées.

De 1995 à 2000, Nelson fut le trésorier et le commissaire aux assurances de la Floride.

En 2000, Bill Nelson est élu sénateur de Floride au Congrès des États-Unis battant le républicain Bill McCollum. Il succède au sénateur républicain sortant Connie Mack.

Nelson s'est fait le pourfendeur des forages pétroliers au large des côtes de Floride.

Démocrate modéré, il est réélu en novembre 2006 avec 60% des voix contre 38% à la républicaine Katherine Harris.

Vol spatial

Du 12 au 18 janvier 1986, il est le deuxième parlementaire à voyager dans l'espace à bord de la navette spatiale Columbia sur le vol Columbia (61-C), en tant que spécialiste de charge utile.
