Biographie
Fille d'un pasteur et d'une chanteuse d'église, à 14 ans elle voyage avec la Hot Harlem Revue où elle joue pendant 7 ans. Elle déménage dans le Texas en 1948 et joue dans les clubs locaux. Elle signe au début des années 1950 avec le label Peacock.
C'est là quelle enregistre en 1953 son morceau le plus connu Hound Dog (de Jerry Leiber & Mike Stoller) avec l'orchestre de Johnny Otis. Ce morceau a été n° 1 du hit-parade rhythm and blues pendant 7 semaines.
Elvis Presley a popularisé ce morceau pour le public blanc. De sa vie, elle ne touchera que 500$ de droits sur cette chanson !Elle a également créé le fameux Ball n'Chain, popularisé plus tard par Janis Joplin.
Au début des années 1960, elle déménage à San Francisco. Elle continue d'enregistrer et fait une tournée en Europe avec l'American Folk Blues Festival en 1965. Elle y enregistrera un disque en Angleterre.
Elle a enregistré pour plusieurs labels et joué avec les plus grands.
L'abus d'alcool aura raison d'elle et elle mourra d'une crise cardiaque, pauvre et mal connue.
