Le genre Santalum regroupe des plantes ligneuses qui peuvent être soit des arbres ou des arbustes, le plus connu commercialement étant le bois de santal indien, Santalum album. Beaucoup sont parasites chlorophylliens. Beaucoup d'espèces, comme S. album, produisent un bois très aromatique, utilisé en parfumerie ou en herboristerie.
