Bhaja Govindam est un hymne composé de 31 vers[1] en sanskrit attribué à Adi Shankara (788 - 820?). Cette hymne mais l'accent sur l'aspect dévotionnel (Bhakti) de la voie spirituelle incarnée en Inde par le Bhakti yoga, ce qui est parfois considéré comme étonnant dans la mesure son auteur est plutôt réputé pour avoir théorisé une autre des voies menant à la libération: le yoga de la connaissance (Jnana Yoga). Les douze premiers vers sont attribués au maître, les suivants à ceux qui l'accompagnaient à Bénarès quand, voyant un professeur de grammaire âgé s'escrimer à faire apprendre le sanskrit à des élèves peu motivés, Shankara lui dit qu'il ferait mieux de s'occuper de son propre salut plutôt que des règles de la grammaire. Govindam désigne le Guru de Shankara, mais c'est aussi l'un des nom de Vishnu ce qui rend également ce texte particulier dans l'œuvre de Shankara puisqu'il était Shivaïte. Il correspond en fait la conception du monde tel que le voit le Monisme: En disant "Govindam", Adi Shankara désigne l'unité monde.
