Robert Isaac Wilberforce (Décembre 1802 - 3 février 1857) était un pasteur anglais et écrivain, second fils de abolitionniste William Wilberforce, et membre actif du Mouvement d'Oxford.

Biographie

Robert Wilberforce est né en décembre 1802, de William Wilberforce. Il a étudié à l'Oriel College à Oxford en 1823.

En 1826, il a été choisi fellow d'Oriel et fut ordonné parmi ses amis et ses collègues sont John Henry Newman, Edward Bouverie Pusey et John Keble. Après quelques années il devint l'un des tuteurs de Oriel College. Le prévôt Edward Hawkins n'aimait pas son point de vue religieux, et en 1831, Wilberforce démissionne et quitté Oxford. En 1832, il vécu a Farleigh, (Kent), puis, en 1840, il déménage à Burton Agnes, près de Hull.

En 1841, il fut nommé archidiacre du diocèse de l'East Riding de Yorkshire. C'est vers cette époque que Wilberforce se lia d'amitié avec Henry Manning. Ils ont alors une correspondance épistolaire sur des questions et ecclésiastiques théologales, et principalement sur les rapports entre l'Église d'Angleterre et le catholicisme romain.

En 1851, Henry Manning rejoint l'Église catholique romaine, et trois ans plus tard, Wilberforce fait de même. Il se préparait pour son ordination quand il mourut à Albano, le 3 février 1857.

Postérité

Il est enterré à Rome dans l'Église de la Minerve, près du Panthéon. Son tombeau est situé juste à l'extérieur du transept droit de l'église. Wilberforce est mort après sa première femme, Agnès Everilda Wrangham Frances (1800-1834) et la seconde femme Jane Legard († 1854).

Il laissait dans le deuil deux fils, dont le plus jeune, Edward Wilberforce (1834-1914), devint l'un des maîtres de la Cour suprême de la magistrature. Le fils de Edward Lionel Robert Wilberforce (1861-1944) a été en 1900 nommé professeur de physique à l'Université de Liverpool. Ses autres enfants inclus: William Francis Wilberforce (1833-1905), vicaire de Brodsworth, Sir Herbert William Wilberforce Wrangham, avocat (1864-1941), Alexander (Alex) Basil Edward Wilberforce (1867-1902), Evelyn Agnès Fannie Wilberforce (1872-1954), RI Wilberforce a aidé son frère, évêque d'Oxford Samuel Wilberforce (1805-1873) pour écrire la vie et de modifier la correspondance de son père.
