Manning Clark AC (1915-1991) était un historien australien. Il a exercé une profonde influence sur l'historiographie australienne.
Biographie
Il a étudie à Melbourne Grammar School, à l'université de Melbourne et à Oxford University. En Oxford il a épousée Dymphna Lodewyckx. Il est revenu en Australie pendant la Deuxième Guerre mondiale et devenu un professeur d'histoire à Geelong Grammar School. En 1944 il est devenu professeur de sciences politiques à l'université de Melbourne et en 1945 il est devenu professeur d'histoire de l'Australie. En 1949 il a transféré à Canberra, la capitale de l'Australie. Il a travaillé au Canberra University College (qui joindrait plus tard l'université nationale australienne). Au milieu des années 50 Clark a conçu un nouveau projet : une grande histoire multivolume de l'Australie, basée sur les sources documentaires mais donnante l'expression à ses propres idées au sujet de l'histoire australienne. Clark a eu un talent pour la prose narrative et son A History of Australia (en six volumes de 1969 et 1987) est devenu un travail de literature influent et populaire.
Écrivant son histoire pendant la période de la guerre froide et l'ère turbulente du premier ministre Gough Whitlam, Clark est devenu un auteur souvent controversé. Ses premiers travaux sont souvent considérés conservateurs tandis que son écriture postérieure est plus de la gauche.
