International Sun-Earth Explorer

La famille de satellites artificiels ISEE (sigle de International Sun-Earth Explorer) est formée de trois satellites destinés à étudier le Soleil, construits par l'ESA et la NASA.

ISEE-1 et ISEE-2

ISEE-1 et ISEE-2 sont deux satellites lancés le 22 octobre 1977 afin d'étudier les interactions entre la magnétosphère terrestre, le vent solaire et les rayons cosmiques. Ils furent placés sur une orbite géocentrique dont l'apogée se situait à 23 rayons terrestres. Après 1 518 orbites autour de la Terre, les deux satellites entrèrent dans l'atmosphère terrestre le 26 septembre 1987.

La NASA a développé ISEE-1 qui pesait 340 kg et l'ESA a construit ISEE-2 d'une masse de 166 kg[1].

ISEE-3 ou ICE

ISEE-3

ISEE-3 a été lancé le 12 août 1978 afin d'étudier les interactions entre la magnétosphère terrestre et le vent solaire. Ce satellite a été le premier objet artificiel placé au point de Lagrange L1 sur l'axe Terre-Soleil[2], à environ 1,5 million de km de la Terre. Il a été maintenu en ce point par de petites actions de contrôle. Il pesait 479 kg.

Une seconde mission lui fut ensuite assignée. Rebaptisé ICE (International Cometary Explorer), il fut placé sur une orbite de transfert le 10 juin 1982, afin de lui faire croiser la queue de la comète de Giacobini-Zinner, le 11  septembre 1985, après avoir traversé la moitié du système solaire. Le satellite traversa également la queue de la comète de Halley en mai 1986.

En 1991, il lui fut assigné la mission d'étudier l'héliosphère. Cette dernière mission se termina le 5 mai 1997.

Le satellite repassera au voisinage du système Terre-Lune en août 2014.
