Le Drama Desk Award, existant depuis 1955, est le seul prix à récompenser les spectacles produits dans tous les domaines des théâtres de New-York dont ceux de Broadway, les off-Broadway, les off-Off-Broadway et les ceux des théâtres à but non lucratif[1]. Il est souvent considéré comme une des récompense majeure du monde du théâtre[2].

Histoire

Appelé à l'origine Vernon Rice Awards, en l'honneur du critique de théâtre Vernon Rice du New York Post, le nom fut changé en 1963[3]. Au début, seul un petit nombre de prix étaient décernés. Au fil des années, ce nombre s'est augmenté avec l'arrivée de nouvelles catégories. Pendant les 15 premières années, les productions de Broadway n'était pas éligibles. En 1968, ils commencèrent à être représentés dans différentes catégories.

Au départ, seuls les vainqueurs étaient annoncés, mais à partir de 1975, la liste des nominés fut présenté à l'avance[4].

Le Drama Desk est composé de critiques de théâtre, de journalistes et d'éditeurs. Plus de 140 d'entre eux votent pour sélectionner les gagnants[5] The Drama Desk chairperson of the Nominating Committee is Barbara Siegel, and its president is William Wolf. The awards' executive producer is Robert R. Blume[6].

La cérémonie des Drama Desk Awards se tient tous les ans au LaGuardia Concert Hall de Fiorello H. LaGuardia High School of Music & Art and Performing Arts à Lincoln Center.
