Daniel Berrigan, (né le 9 mai 1921) est un poète américain, militant pour la paix et prêtre jésuite. Daniel et son frère Philip ont été pendant un certain temps parmi les Dix Fugitifs les plus recherchés du FBI pour actes de vandalisme et destruction de biens publics.

« A l'automne 1967, le père Philippe Berrigan, un prêtre joséphite qui avait participé à la Seconde Guerre mondiale, accompagné par l'artiste David Eberhardt et ses amis Tom Lewis et James Mengel, se rendit au bureau d'incorporation de Baltimore (Maryland), aspergea les registres de sang et attendit qu'on vienne l'arrêter[1].  »

Au mois de mai suivant, avec son frère, Daniel (un jésuite qui était allé au Nord Viêt Nam où il avait constaté les effets des bombardements américains), il se rendit avec sept autres personnes au bureau d'incorporation de Catonsville (Maryland) où il brûla les registres. Son action fut connue sous le nom de L'affaire des neuf de Catonsville. Daniel Berrigan fut traduit devant un tribunal et condamné, mais au moment où on allait le mettre en prison, il disparut. Éternellement poursuivi par le FBI, il assista aux fêtes Pâques|pascales de l'université Cornell à Ithaca, New York, où il échappa aux agents du Federal Bureau qui le cherchaient dans la foule, en montant sur la scène et en se cachant dans une des marionnettes du Bread and Puppet Theatre. Il trouva ensuite refuge dans une ferme où, pendant quatre mois, il écrivit des poèmes, des articles. il donna même des interviews. A Philadelphie, il alla faire un sermon dans une église avant de disparaître à nouveau. Finalement le FBI réussit à le rattraper et à le mettre en prison[2].

Berrigan a écrit une pièce de théâtre à partir de son expérience : Le procès des neuf de catonsville qui a été représentée à Broadway en 1971 et adaptée au cinéma en 1972[réf. nécessaire].

  • Daniel Berrigan a été interrogé sur sa vie et sur l'activisme pacifique dans le livre Generation on Fire: Voices of Protest from the 1960s, an Oral History, 2006 éditions University Press of Kentucky, (ISBN 0-81312-416-6) de Jeff Kisseloff.
  • Daniel Berrigan a comparu brièvement dans le film de Roland Joffé 1986 La Mission avec Robert de Niro et Jeremy Irons.
  • En 1994, Berrigan a figuré dans une publicité pour Ben & Jerry's crème glacée. Le produit de la vente de l'affiche a été donné au Fonds de défense des enfants.
  • Le personnage du père de Corrigan dans le roman Let The Great World Spin (2009, par Colum McCann a été inspiré par la vie de Daniel Berrigan[4].
