Juge sous la dynastie Song, Bao Zheng (999 - 1062), préfet de Kaifeng, capitale des Song du Nord, est célèbre pour son intégrité et son respect des lois qui lui valurent le surnom de Bao Gong, « Bao le juste ». La religion populaire en fait parfois un juge des enfers.

Ce personnage historique, qui inspira de nombreux artistes, est devenu l'incarnation du juge intègre dans l'opéra chinois. Ainsi, par exemple, l'opéra L'Exécution de Chen Shimei relate l'histoire d'un jeune homme prêt à tuer sa femme pour épouser la fille de l'empereur, et que Bao Zheng fait condamner à mort.

Plusieurs séries télévisées racontent les aventures de Bao ; c'est notamment le cas de Bao Qing Tian, une série chinoise réalisée en 1993 et 1994.

Enfin, le juge Bao a inspiré les auteurs de bande dessinée Patrick Marty et Chongrui Nie qui lui ont consacré une trilogie[1].
