La Banking school est une école de pensée économique formée à l'origine par un groupe d'économistes britanniques au début du XIXe siècle et défendant le banking principle
Ce principe énonce que la quantité de monnaie en circulation doit avant tout dépendre des besoins des agents économiques. La masse monétaire doit alors être adaptée aux besoins des affaires, l'importance de l'or et de l'argent est donc ici minimisée.
La Banking school s'oppose à la Currency school, qui argumente que l'émission de billets de banque doit être en proportionnelle avec la quantité d'or détenue dans les réserves de la banque d'Angleterre en vue d'éviter toute inflation.
En 1844, le Bank Charter Act impose le currency principle au Royaume-Uni, mais le système monétaire français s'inspirera plutôt du banking principle.
