La ville américaine de Yankton est le siège du comté de Yankton, dans l’État du Dakota du Sud. Selon le recensement de 2010, sa population s’élève à 14 454 habitants. Densité : 285,3 hab/km² (739 hab/mi²). Superficie totale : 20,7 km² (8 mi²).

Histoire

Le site a été exploré par l’expédition Lewis et Clark (1804-1806). La ville a été la première capitale du Territoire du Dakota de 1861 à 1883, date à laquelle Bismarck est devenue la capitale. Son nom provient d’une ethnie amérindienne locale qui a participé à la bataille de Little Big Horn.
