Wesleyan est la forme adjectivée anglaise du nom propre Wesley qui réfère soit à John Wesley, le fondateur du méthodisme, une tendance du mouvement protestant, soit à une ou l’autre des églises méthodistes qui en découlent. L’Église wesleyenne, s’est séparée de l’Église méthodiste épiscopale en 1843.

Utilisé en tant que substantif, le nom Wesleyan réfère à une des nombreuses universités et universités d’arts libéraux, en Amérique et en Asie, qui ont été nommées, chronologiquement depuis 1831, d’après John Wesley :

On appelle également Wesleyen quelqu’un qui adopte les principes de la théologie wesleyenne.

Dans un usage étroitement apparenté, wesleyen peut aussi renvoyer, en théologie, à l’accent placé sur la question de la sanctification, caractéristique du mouvement de sainteté dont faisait partie John Wesley.
