Bertinelli a épousé Eddie Van Halen, le 11 avril 1981. Ils ont un fils Wolfgang «Wolfie» William Van Halen (né le 16 mars 1991) ensemble. Elle a dit le perdre, car son mari etait devenu accro à la cocaïne. Le 5 décembre 2005, elle a demandé le divorce, qui a été finalisée plus de deux ans plus tard, le 20 décembre 2007.

Bertinelli a été dans une relation avec planificateur financier Tom Vitale depuis 2004. Le 20 mai 2010, ils ont annoncé leur engagement à se marier. Ils se sont mariés en janvier 2011.

Le 19 avril 2010, Bertinelli couru dans le marathon de Boston au profit du Dana-Farber Cancer Institute à Boston. Elle a terminé la course avec un temps de 5:14:37.
