Ujamaa est un concept qui forma la base de la politique de développement social et économique de Julius Nyerere en Tanzanie peu après l'indépendance du Royaume-Uni en 1961. En 1967, le Président Nyerere a publié son plan de développement intitulé la Déclaration d'Arusha, dans lequel il a souligné la nécessité d'un modèle africain de développement et qui a constitué la base du socialisme africain. Ce modèle est caractérisé par quelques éléments clés, le fait par exemple qu'un individu ne se construise qu'à travers la société ou la communauté à laquelle il appartient.
« Ujamaa » est un mot swahili signifiant « famille élargie » ou « fraternité ».
