Chaîne à péage

Une chaîne à péage ou chaîne payante est une chaîne de télévision dont l'accès est (au moins partiellement) assujetti à une commercialisation, soit par abonnement, soit en paiement à la séance (pay-per-view, c'est-à-dire achat « impulsionnel » sur le principe de la VOD).

En dehors des éventuelles émissions diffusées « en clair », son signal est « chiffré » (embrouillé, crypté, codé) et assorti d'un système d'« accès conditionnel » ou contrôle d'accès.

Plusieurs méthode sont utilisé afin de limité l'accès aux clients passant par le péage :

  • Cryptage dans le cas de la diffusion hertzienne. Dans ce cas, il faut un appareil de décryptage, appelé décodeur télévision. À noter que dans la plupart des cas, les chaînes ne fabriquent pas cet appareil, elles sous-traitent son développement à des sociétés d'électroniques comme SAGEM.
  • diffusion du flux au cas par cas dans le cas de l'ADSL. Il n'y a donc pas besoin de cryptage, mais il faut un flux montant.
