The Great depression est le quatrième album solo du rappeur new-yorkais DMX. Sorti aux États-Unis le 3 octobre 2001, ce fut le 4e album de suite à être propulsé au top 1 du Billboard le jour de sa sortie. L'album a une nouvelle fois démontrer l'allégeance de DMX pour Ruff Ryder. The Great Depression devint très vite disque platine, mais n'attend pas les ventes de ses prédécesseurs. Les grands titres de l'album sont Who We Be, We Right Here, et I Miss You.

Cet album fut vendu à 439.000 exemplaires le jour de sa sortie. En dépit de ces résultats et des 3 millions d'albums vendus dans le monde, The great depression reçu peu d'éloges de la part des critiques. En fait, l'album a été crédité par les critiques comme le plus médiocre de DMX. Les thèmes de l'album sont le racisme, la violence dans les rues et la drogue. Dans l'album, les noms de pistolets ne sont pas censurés contrairement à la législation. Un exemple, dans le titre I'ma Bang, la phrase Get the glock devrait être normalement censurée en Get the g***k, cependant c'est la phrase originale qui est utilisée.
