The Grateful Dead est le premier album de Grateful Dead. Il a été enregistré chez Warner Bros. Records et est sorti en mars 1967.

Histoire

L'album a été enregistré en seulement quatre jours, principalement au Studio A à Los Angeles. Le groupe aurait voulu enregistrer l'album dans leur ville natale de San Francisco, mais aucun studio d'enregistrement de qualité existait à l'époque. Le groupe a choisi David Hassinger comme producteur parce qu'il avait travaillé en tant qu'ingénieur pour les Rolling Stones et Jefferson Airplane pour l'album Surrealistic Pillow (le dernier où Jerry Garcia a joué comme musicien). A la demande de la Warner Bros., quatre morceaux ont été raccourcis.[1]. Phil Lesh commente dans son autobiographie qui « pour mon oreille, la seule chanson qui a le "son" que nous voulions était alors Viola Lee Blues. Personne n'avait aucune expérience dans l'enregistrement[2]


L'album a été vu comme « a big deal in San Francisco »[3] mais peu de stations ont diffusé l'album en dehors de San Francisco jusqu'à l'arrivée des radios libres FM deux mois après.[3] Warner Bros. threw the band a release party at the Fugazi Hall in North Beach. Joe Smith is noted for saying he is "proud that Warner Bros. is introducing the Grateful Dead to the world."[1]

Une version avec un nouvel arrangement avec des versions complètes de cinq chansons et six bonus sera ressortie par Rhino dans le coffret The Golden Road (1965-1973) en 2001, puis un album seul en 2003.

Cet album ne doit pas être confondu avec un autre intitulé Grateful Dead, un album en public sorti en 1971.

Le disque a été fait d'un vinyle épais semblable à de vieux 78 tours, ce qui était rare à l'époque.
