Synopsis
Kimberley Wells, journaliste à la télévision, filme au cours d'un documentaire un incident à la centrale nucléaire de Ventana. Son caméraman le montre à un ingénieur nucléaire qui confirme la réalité de l'accident et son caractère potentiellement dangereux.
C'est à ce moment qu'est évoquée la notion du Syndrome Chinois.
En effet, le film est basé sur un scénario qui envisage la possibilité d'un emballement du réacteur nucléaire de la centrale (résultant de lacunes volontaires dans le contrôle des principaux composants de la centrale au moment de sa construction) conduisant celui-ci à faire fondre son enceinte de confinement et à traverser le sol ; en théorie jusqu'au centre de la Terre (et non jusqu'en Chine comme le laisserait supposer le film).
Sorti 15 jours avant l'accident de Three Miles Island, ce film eut un écho considérable dans l'opinion et alimenta le mouvement contre l'énergie nucléaire aux USA.
