Tammany Hall

Tammany Hall est le nom d’une organisation associée au parti démocrate, qui a joué un rôle majeur à New York entre 1790 et les années 1960.

La Tammany Society, qui prit le nom de Tammany Hall du fait du bâtiment qui lui servait de siège, aidait les immigrants nouvellement arrivés, nombreux à New York, à s'installer, à se nourrir et se vêtir si nécessaire, à trouver un emploi, à se familiariser aux démarches administratives et aux mœurs américaines, tout en leur permettant de créer de premières relations sociales. Il œuvrait donc comme une institution de patronage à Manhattan, mais surtout de clientélisme.

Les membres du Tammany Hall étaient friands de noms d'origine amérindienne. Ainsi, le nom Tammany vient de celui d'un chef amérindien de la tribu des Lenapes, Tammany ou Tamanend, qui vécut de 1628 à 1698 dans le Delaware. De même, le chef du Tammany Hall était appelé grand sachem, et le plus notable d'entre eux fut le flamboyant William Tweed, "the Boss", qui régna sur New York de 1858 à 1877. Tammany Hall contrôlait le parti démocrate à New York, de la victoire de Fernando Wood en 1854 à l'élection du républicain Fiorello La Guardia en 1934. À compter de cette date, l'influence de l'organisme diminue jusqu'à sa disparition.

Un extrait de "Sun Yat-sen" de Jean Chesneaux (1959 ; p. 83) : "Mais (Sun Yat-sen) était sans illusion sur l'authenticité de la démocratie américaine de son temps. De passage à New York il avait assisté à une élection, au marchandage des voix entre les "bosses", aux tractations des officines secrètes comme le fameux "Tammany Hall" dont les candidats n'étaient que des hommes de paille. "Pendant mon séjour aux États-Unis, avouera-t-il, j'ai eu la possibilité de vérifier les mœurs réelles et le gouvernement apparent, et de voir en pleine lumière la simplicité et la sauvagerie, la sagesse et la corruption.... C'est... sans illusions sur l'Occident que Sun achève ce grand voyage".
