Caractéristiques du genre

Ce genre botanique est très important dans le monde, avec environ 1 700 espèces recensées.

Il comporte des plantes herbacées ou des arbustes à feuilles généralement alternes, parfois opposées.

L'inflorescence est une cyme, le plus souvent unipare.

Les fleurs sont hermaphrodites, à corolle étoilée avec cinq pétales souvent réfléchis (retournés vers l'arrière).

Les étamines saillantes forment un cône autour du gynécée.

L'ovaire est supère.

Les fruits sont des baies.
