Prix Smith

Le Prix Smith est le nom des deux récompenses décernées annuellement à des étudiants chercheurs en physique théorique et en mathématiques appliquées à l'Université de Cambridge en Angleterre.

Ce prix annuel, décerné chaque année sauf en 1917, et partagé entre les deux junior Bachelors of Arts ayant réalisés les plus grandes avancées en mathématiques et en philosophie naturelle a été établi sur demande posthume de Robert Smith après sa mort en 1768 ; Smith avait légué 3500 livres sterling du capital de South Sea Company à l'Université, une partie des dividendes devant être dédiée au prix. Initialement le prix était décerné grâce à un examen écrit mais depuis 1885 il est décerné au meilleur essai. Le Prix Rayleigh est un prix additionnel décerné depuis 1911.
