Sian Elias

Dame Sian Seerpoohi Elias, GNZM, QC (née le 13 mars 1949) est le président de la Cour suprême de Nouvelle-Zélande, et donc à la tête du système judiciaire du pays. Elle est en poste depuis le 17 mai 1999. Notons qu'elle est la première femme à la tête de cette institution, créée en 2003 en remplacement de la High Court of New Zealand.

Née à Londres (Royaume-Uni) d'un père arménien et d'une mère galloise (d'où elle tire ses prénom et nom gallois), Sian Elias est diplômée en droit à l'Université d'Auckland en 1970. Elle continue ses études à Stanford avant de commencer à travailler dans un cabinet d'avocats à Auckland. Elle a servi comme membre du Motor Sports Licensing Appeak Authority et du Working Party on the Environment. Elle a également été Law Commissioner de 1984 à 1988. Elle est connue pour son travail en rapport avec le Traité de Waitangi.

Elle est mariée à Hugh Fletcher, ancien PDG de Fletcher Challenge et aujourd'hui président de l'Université d'Auckland.
