La famille des Sesiidae a été introduite par Jean-Baptiste Alphonse Dechauffour de Boisduval (1799-1879) en 1828. Ce sont des insectes lépidoptères qui présentent la caractéristique d'avoir une apparence évoquant celle de différents hyménoptères.

Elle contient dans le monde environ 800 espèces réparties en 170 genres. 20 genres sont présents dans la région paléarctique, avec quelques dizaines en Europe dont 57 espèces en France.
