Les sclérites sont les plaques de chitine formant l'exosquelette des arthropodes. Ces pièces sont appelées :

  • tergites sur le dos de l'animal,
  • pleurites sur le flanc de l'animal,
  • sternites sur la partie ventrale de l'animal.

Chez les insectes, on dira notum plutôt que tergite, pleuron plutôt que pleurites et sternum plutôt que sternites.

Ces plaques sont articulées entre elles. On appelle suture l'articulation entre deux sclérites.
