La Scala Santa, c'est-à-dire en italien le « Saint Escalier », est dans la tradition chrétienne, celui du prétoire de Jérusalem gravi par Jésus lors de son jugement par Ponce Pilate qui décida de sa crucifixion. Plusieurs lieux passent pour conserver cette précieuse relique de la Passion dont le plus célèbre situé à proximité de la Basilique Saint-Jean du Latran.

La Scala Santa de Rome

Selon une tradition médiévale, cet escalier fut transporté de Jérusalem à Rome en 326 par Hélène, mère du premier empereur chrétien, Constantin. Cette Scala Santa romaine, composée de 28 marches de marbre blanc, fut transportée en 1589, sous le pontificat de Sixte V, du vieux palais du Latran en cours de destruction au Sancta Sanctorum situé sur la partie gauche de la place Saint-Jean de Latran, dans la Basilique San Salvatore della Scala Santa.

L'escalier, flanqué de deux autres escaliers d'utilisation classique, a été ceint de panneaux de bois décorés de peintures al fresco représentant les scènes de la Passion du Christ et réalisées notamment par Giovanni Baglione, Giacomo Stella, Giovanni Battista Pozzo, Paris Nogari, Prospero Orsi, Ferraù Fenzoni, Paul Bril, Paulo Guidotti, Giovanni Battista Ricci, Cesaro Torelli, Antonio Vivarini, Andrea Lilio, Cesare & Vicenzo Conti, Baldassare Croce, Ventura Salimbeni, et Antonio Scalvat. La Scala Santa mène à une scène de la Crucifixion.

Cet escalier est accessible à tous les fidèles qui se doivent de le gravir seulement à genoux.
