L'atmosphère est l'enveloppe gazeuse entourant certains astres, comme l'atmosphère d'une planète ou l'atmosphère stellaire d'une étoile. Dans le cas d'une planète « gazeuse », l'atmosphère désigne la partie de la planète dont la matière est en phase gazeuse. Ainsi :
- l'atmosphère de Vénus est l'épaisse couche gazeuse entourant le globe vénusien ;
- l'atmosphère de la Terre est la couche gazeuse qui entoure le globe terrestre ;
- l'atmosphère de Mars est la fine couche gazeuse qui entoure le globe martien ;
- l'atmosphère de Jupiter est l'épaisse couche gazeuse supérieure de Jupiter ; certains de ses satellites possèdent également une enveloppe gazeuse :
