Sarat Chandra Das

Sarat Chandra Das (1849-1917) était un lettré indien ayant une connaissance de la langue tibétaine et la culture tibétaine.

Il a travaillé durant une période comme espion pour les Britanniques, partant en expéditions au Tibet pour rassembler des informations sur les Tibétains, les Russes et les Chinois. Après qu'il eut quitté le Tibet, les raisons de sa visite ont été découvertes et de nombreux Tibétains qui s'étaient liés d'amitié avec lui auraient souffert de représailles. Dans la dernière partie de sa vie, Sarat Chandra Das s'est installé à Darjeeling, où il est devenu directeur de l'Internat Bhutia. Il a nommé sa maison “Lhassa Villa” et y a reçu de nombreux invités notoires, dont Charles Alfred Bell, Ekai Kawaguchi et Evans-Wentz. Il a compilé un dictionnaire tibéto-anglais, qui a été publié en 1902.
