La Banque royale d'Écosse , « Banca Rìoghail na h-Alba » en gaëlique écossais et « Royal Bank of Scotland » en anglais, fondée à Édimbourg en 1727 par une charte royale, est l’une des plus vieilles banques britanniques. En 2008, c'est la plus grande banque d'Écosse, la seconde du Royaume-Uni et d’Europe, ainsi que la cinquième dans le monde en termes de capitalisation boursière[1]. Elle ne doit pas être confondue avec la Banque d'Écosse.
Le siège de la banque se situe à St Andrew's Square (Place de Saint-André) à Édimbourg. La banque possède des agences et des bureaux en Europe, en Amérique et en Asie. Le groupe est coté sur l’indice FTSE 100 de la bourse de Londres. En 2005, son PDG est Fred A. Goodwin.
La crise financière de 2008 a provoqué une chute de ses actions en bourse de 88,40 % l'an dernier en raison des actifs toxiques qu'elle détenait en ce qui concerne les credit default swaps. Depuis début 2009, l'action a perdu 80,38 % au 20 janvier portant ainsi la baisse à 97,58 % depuis le 1er janvier 2008[2]. Après cette déroute, il est question de vendre l'ensemble de ces actifs d'outre-mer.

Fin novembre 2008 : Le gouvernement britannique devient l'actionnaire majoritaire de RBS, à hauteur de 57,9 %, en acquérant pour 15 milliards d'euros d'actions ordinaires et pour 5 milliards d'euros d'actions préférentielles[1].
En janvier 2009, RBS annonce des pertes pour l'année financière s'élevant à près de 31 milliards d'euros, conséquences de la radiation d'actifs détenus par ABN AMRO[3], société qu'elle avait acquise en octobre 2007. Cependant, en févier 2009, RBS publie ses états financiers : la perte est de 27 milliards d'euros[4]. En octobre 2008, quelques mois avant l'annonce des résultats désastreux de RBS, son PDG, Sir Fred Goodwin, a quitté son poste en recevant une prime de départ de 700 000 livres par an[4].
En avril 2009, RBS a annoncé la suppression, sur deux ans, de 9 000 emplois[5]
