Ashkenaz

Ashkenaz (version Jérusalem), Aschkenaz (version Louis Segond) ou Askénaz (version Martin), est le fils aîné de Gomère, et le frère de Riphath et Togarma (Gen. 10:3, 1 Chron. 1:6). La tradition juive le considère comme l'ancêtre des peuples germaniques, scandinaves et russes, probablement du fait de la ressemblance du nom de Gomer avec celui de Germamia ou Germania. D'autres suggèrent qu'il serait l'ancêtre des Scythes (Ishkuza en assyrien).

La première tradition est cependant bien plus courante, et les Juifs ayant peuplé la vallée du Rhin ainsi que leurs descendants, ce qui a trait à leur culture et à leur rite, sont dénommés achkénazes ou Ashkenazim (hébreu: sing. אַשְׁכֲּנָזִי, pl. אַשְׁכֲּנָזִים; prononcé sing. [ˌaʃkəˈnazi] pl. [ˌaʃkəˈnazim]; également יְהוּדֵי אַשְׁכֲּנָז Yehoudei Ashkenaz, "les Juifs d'Ashkenaz").
