Le terme anglais redshirt s'applique, aux États-unis, aux joueurs universitaires NCAA, notamment en basket-ball, qui ne disputent pas de match officiel pendant une saison.

Un joueur universitaire ne peut disputer que quatre saisons, durant lesquelles on le qualifie successivement de :

  1. freshman ;
  2. sophomore ;
  3. junior ;
  4. senior.

Le redshirt permet au joueur de rester cinq années à l'université.

Ce statut peut être volontaire, dans le cas d'un jeune joueur qui ne pourrait prétendre à un rôle majeur dans l'équipe, alors qu'il étudie à l'université notamment s'il est intellectuellement précoce.

Le statut s'applique aux joueurs changeant d'équipe, qui doivent passer un an sans jouer en NCAA. Ce fut le cas d'Olivier Saint-Jean et de nombreux autres joueurs connus, mécontents de leur rôle dans leur première équipe. Cette règle est faite pour décourager les transferts. Elle ne s'applique toutefois pas aux joueurs changeant de ligue, comme ceux ayant fait leurs deux années de junior college (genre d'IUT) et poursuivant dans un college de NCAA.

Enfin, ce statut peut être accordé pour raisons médicales à un joueur se blessant au tout début d'une saison ou sur dérogation.
