Punch and Judy

Punch and Judy est un spectacle de marionnettes célèbre en Grande-Bretagne, dont les deux personnages principaux sont Punch et sa femme Judy. Il est composé de courtes scènes dans lesquelles Punch intéragit avec un autre personnage. Traditionnellement, le spectacle est réalisé par un seul marionnettiste, appelé Professor, qui est donc capable de contrôler deux marionnettes à la fois.

Scénario

Pris de jalousie, Punch décide d'étrangler son bébé. Judy court pour le sauver, et frappe Punch avec un gourdin jusqu'à ce que ce dernier, exaspéré, ramasse à son tour un gourdin et frappe sa femme jusqu'à la tuer. Il jette ensuite les deux corps hors de la maison, ce qui attire l'attention d'un policier. Punch se sauve mais est finalement arrêté par l'Inquisition qui le jette en prison. Il parvient cependant à s'échapper grâce à une clé dorée. Le reste de l'histoire est une allégorie montrant comment Punch parvient à triompher des maux de la chair : il triomphe ainsi de l'Ennui (incarné par un chien), de la Maladie (déguisée en docteur), de la Mort et même du Diable.

Personnages

Punch

Punch est un bossu habillé en bouffon, et son nez crochu touche presque son menton. Il porte un bâton aussi grand que lui, qu'il utilise à son gré sur les autres personnages. Il possède une voix rauque produite à l'aide d'un instrument appelé swazzle ou swatchel que le Professor met dans sa bouche.

Une réplique célèbre de Punch est : « That's the way to do it ! » (« C'est comme ça qu'il faut faire ! »)

Histoire

Le spectacle de Punch and Judy tire ses origines de la commedia dell'arte italienne. Les personnages de Punch et Judy dérivent de ceux de Pulcinello et de Joan.

Le premier compte rendu écrit sur le spectacle de Punch and Judy date du 9 mai 1662. Son auteur, le diariste Samuel Pepys, assista à l'un des spectacles près de St. Paul's Church au Covent Garden à Londres. Le spectacle était mené par un italien du nom de Pietro Gimonde, et surnommé Signor Bologna.

La première transcription du spectacle date des années 1840 et se trouve dans le livre London Labour and the London Poor de Henry Mayhew.

De nos jours, la plupart des spectacles de Punch and Judy sont réalisés le long des plages pendant les vacances d'été.
