Du nord au sud, l'avenue traverse toute la longueur de Notting Hill. Le samedi, la rue abrite le Portobello Road Market, le célèbre marché connu pour ses magasins d'antiquités.

Son nom commémore la prise de Portobello (Panama) par la flotte britannique le 21 novembre 1739.

L'avenue est connue aussi pour son apparition dans le film L'apprentie sorcière de Robert Stevenson (1971).
