Arétas IV

Arétas IV ou Harithath IV, de son titre « Philopatris » (Ami de son peuple), fut roi des Nabatéens d'environ 9 av. J.-C. à 40 ap. J.-C..

Arétas IV se débarrassa de son ministre Syllaios. Étant monté sur le trône sans avoir sollicité l'accord de Rome, contrairement aux usages pour les États-clients, Auguste décida d'annexer temporairement son royaume de 3 av. J.-C. à 1 av. J.-C.[1].

Hérode Antipas II épousa Phasaelis, la fille d'Arétas IV lors de la succession d'Hérode Ier le Grand, qu'il répudiera pour épouser Hérodiade.

En l'an 34 ap. J.-C., Arétas IV fit arrêter Saul de Tarse à Damas qui réussira à s'échapper.

En l'an 36 ap. J.-C., défaite d'Hérode Antipas II par Aretas IV.
