Off the Wall est le cinquième album solo de Michael Jackson, paru en août 1979. Produit par Quincy Jones, c'est le premier album de Michael Jackson chez Epic.

Après quatre albums chez Motown, Michael Jackson se détache de l’univers familial pour prendre son envol et entre en contact avec Quincy Jones, qu'il avait connu lors du tournage de The Wiz. Quincy Jones dira plus tard « J'ai dit à Michael : Ne t'inquiète pas, j'adore quand on me sous-estime : c'est là que je suis le meilleur. Et finalement cela s'est révélé être vrai »^[3]

Sorti trois semaines avant le 21^e anniversaire de Michael, Off the Wall est le 1^er album solo de Michael Jackson en tant qu’adulte, son 1^er chez le label Epic, et sa 1^re collaboration avec le légendaire producteur Quincy Jones.

Off the Wall mélange harmonieusement funk, disco, pop et soul, créant ainsi un album inoubliable, dévoilant au passage l’étendue de la voix du chanteur. Quincy Jones décide de faire appel à Rod Temperton, Paul McCartney et choisit l'un des meilleurs bassistes du monde Louis Johnson, du groupe funk The Brothers Johnson, qui travaillera avec Michael sur son prochain album Thriller.

Off the Wall a non seulement fait de Michael Jackson une immense star, mais a aussi battu des records. À cette époque, ce disque a été le premier, pour un artiste solo, à obtenir 4 titres classés dans le Top 10, record qu'il a lui-même battu ensuite.

Le 1^er titre de l’album "Don't Stop 'Til You Get Enough" est entièrement chanté en falsetto. Le mid-tempo aux synthétiseurs funky, "Rock With You", est resté 4 semaines n^o 1 aux États-Unis. Michael Jackson joue la carte de l’émotion avec "She's Out Of My Life" : vers la fin de la chanson, on peut même entendre des vibrations dans sa voix, comme s’il pleurait.

Premier album produit par Quincy Jones pour Michael Jackson, Off the Wall a été un triomphe pour le tandem Jackson-Jones.

L'album remporte un succès mondial et s'est vendu, à ce jour, à plus de 20 millions d'exemplaires à travers le monde.

L'album Off the Wall est disponible dans le coffret 5 CD The Collection, sorti en 2009.
