Of Wolf and Man est la 9e piste du 5e album du groupe Metallica surnommé le Black Album à cause de sa pochette entièrement noire et dure 4 min 15. Le titre de la chanson est une référence au roman de John Steinbeck Des souris et des hommes (Of Mice and Men).
La chanson relate les similitudes existant entre le loup et l’homme ; de plus elle parle surtout du fait de se transformer en loup-garou (l’expression shape shift est beaucoup utilisée dans le morceau ainsi que Hair Stands on the Back of my Neck) et parle de préserver ses instincts naturels et la nature en elle-même et ne pas laisser la culture nous déshumaniser. Puis la chanson relate peut-être le fait de ne pas oublier notre côté humain et sans doute aussi de vivre une vie plus sauvage et de dire d’une certaine manière non à la société. Il y a une part de loup dans chaque être humain (Seek the Wolf in Thyself).
Of Wolf and Man fut interprétée en concert lors du concert symphonique S & M en 1999 à San Francisco et fut jouée par le groupe en septembre 2008 lors de prestations télévisées avant d’entamer en octobre 2008 leur tournée suite à la parution de leur album Death Magnetic.Elle fut également joué en juillet 2009, au concert à Werchter.
