Le nœud est une unité de vitesse utilisée en navigation maritime et aérienne. 1 nœud correspond à 1 mille marin par heure, soit exactement 1,852 km/h ou 0,514 m/s.

On estimait autrefois la vitesse d'un navire à l'aide d'un loch à bateau. La planchette était amarrée à un cordage comportant des nœuds régulièrement espacés qu'un marin comptait à haute voix au fur et à mesure qu'ils glissaient entre ses doigts. Le compte se faisait pendant le temps d'écoulement d'un sablier. Le nombre résultant, exprimé en nœuds, mesure donc une vitesse et non une longueur.

Du fait des mesures anglo-saxonnes, on espaçait les nœuds de 47 pieds et 3 pouces (14,4 m) et on calibrait le sablier de manière à mesurer une période de 28 secondes[1]. Désormais, le nœud correspond exactement à une vitesse d'un mille marin par heure (soit 1 852 m/h), mais n'appartient pas au système international (SI). On utilise généralement pour cette unité les symboles nd ou kt (pour knot, nœud en anglais) ; les abréviations kn (pour knot) ainsi que kts (pour knots) sont aussi utilisées.

Le mille marin correspond à la valeur moyenne d'une minute d'arc de méridien. De fait, un nœud correspond à une minute de latitude parcourue en 1 heure.
