Novantae

Les Novantae étaient un peuple celte localisé près de Galloway dans le sud-ouest de l’actuelle Écosse. Leur base était autour du Rhins of Galloway, péninsule de Dumfries and Galloway, en bordure de la mer d'Irlande. Ils avaient pour voisins les Selgovae à l’ouest, les Votadini au nord-ouest et les Damnoni au nord.

Protohistoire

Les fouilles archéologiques montrent qu’il s’agissait d’un peuple d’agriculteurs-éleveurs, ils n’ont pas laissé d’édifices fortifiés importants.

Ce peuple est connu pour avoir eu des relations commerciales avec les Romains. L’important centre du début du christianisme de Whithorn (Candida Casa) s’étendait sur le territoire des Novantae et le hillfort de Mote of Mark semble avoir été un important centre commercial.

Après le départ des troupes romaines de Grande-Bretagne, le territoire habité par les Novantae était menacé par les royaumes brittoniques de Gododdin, Rheged et Alt Clut, et plus tard par les Anglo-saxons de Bernicie.
