Les Nethinims descendaient, selon la tradition biblique, des Gabaonites (Josué 9-27). Ils furent épargnés par les Hébreux et donnés par David aux Lévites (Esdras 8:20) afin de devenir les serviteurs héréditaires du Temple de Jérusalem.
