Naboth était un habitant de Jezreel, qui refusa de vendre au roi Achab une vigne située près du palais de ce prince et qui était l'héritage de ses pères : Jézabel, femme d'Achab, l'accusa, pour se venger, d'avoir blasphémé contre Dieu et maudit le roi.
À l'aide de faux témoins, elle réussit à le faire condamner à être lapidé (899 avant l'ère commune), et s'empara de sa vigne. Le prophète Élie, en apprenant ce crime, se présenta devant Achab et lui prédit qu'au lieu même où les chiens avaient léché le sang de Naboth, ils se désaltéreraient dans le sien. Cette prophétie s'accomplit peu d'années après.
