Nabopolassar

Nabopolossar est le fondateur du nouvel empire de Babylone à la fin du VIIe siècle av. J.‑C.

Nabopolossar est gouverneur de Babylone pour le compte des rois d'Assyrie, lorsque, profitant des troubles qui suivirent la mort d'Assurbanipal, il s'affranchit, en 626 av. J.-C., de cette tutelle pesante. L'année suivante, en 625 av. J.-C., il livre une grande bataille dans la région de Nippur, contre Assuretililâni, le fils désigné par Assurbanipal pour lui succéder, qui sera tué dans la bataille. Fort de cette victoire Nabopolassar entra dans Babylone et se fit proclamer roi de Chaldée, tandis que Sinshariskhun, le second fils d'Assurbanipal, se fit proclamer roi d'Assyrie.

En se proclamant roi, Nabopolossar fonde la dynastie chaldéenne de Babylone dont son fils, Nabuchodonosor II, sera le plus brillant représentant. Il est vainqueur à deux reprises des Assyriens, en 616 av. J.-C. puis en 615 av. J.-C., à Arapka mais ne réussit pas à s'emparer d'Assur. C'est alors qu'il s'allie avec le roi des Mèdes, Cyaxare. Les coalisés s'emparent de Ninive, lors de l'été 612 av. J.-C., qui est ravagée de fond en comble. Il poursuit la lutte contre les derniers souverains assyriens et s'empare d'Harran en 610609 av. J.-C. Il meurt le 1er septembre 605 av. J.-C.
