Numéro d'identification personnel

Un numéro d'identification personnel (abrégé par NIP, ou PIN pour l'anglais Personal Identification Number) ou code confidentiel est une suite de chiffres destinée à authentifier le propriétaire d'une carte de GAB, d'une carte de paiement, d'une carte à puce ou d'une carte SIM. Au contraire des mots de passe, le NIP ne doit être composé que de chiffres, quatre ou plus, car le clavier par lequel les porteurs effectuent les transactions ne contient souvent que des touches numériques (téléphone mobile, terminal de paiement électronique...).

De façon technique, il s'agit de l'identifiant d'un utilisateur sur un système multi-utilisateur et plus généralement, identifiant d'une personne dans un système quelconque.

Lorsqu'un porteur reçoit une carte de crédit, par exemple, il reçoit souvent un NIP, qu'il peut parfois modifier ultérieurement. Cette modification peut se réaliser par téléphone, par un GAB ou par un terminal spécialement conçu à cet effet.

En téléphonie mobile, ce code protège la carte SIM contre toute utilisation non autorisée. Au bout de trois mauvaises saisies du NIP, le portable se bloque et il faut le faire débloquer par son opérateur téléphonique. Le portable est aussi désactivé. Pour le réactiver il faut saisir le PUK.
