Les métathériens (Metatheria), dont les marsupiaux ou mammifères à poche, forment une sous-classe des mammifères, dans l'embranchement des vertébrés. Beaucoup de classifications identifient les Metatheria à tous les Marsupialia c'est-à-dire aux espèces actuellement vivantes et celles préhistoriques. Dans cette hypothèse, Marsupialia est une infra-classe et les Ameridelphia et Australidelphia forment les super-ordres. Dans d'autre systématiques comme celle de McKenna & Bell, 1997[1] Marsupialia est un synonyme, un super-ordre ou un taxon inférieur non classé[2].

Taxonomie

Le terme de metatheria dérivent du grec meta qui signifie autre et de thēr qui signifie animal sauvage. Ce terme peut donc se traduire par autre animal sauvage. Il a été proposé par Thomas Henry Huxley en 1880.
