Edward John Moreton Drax Plunkett (Londres, 1878Dublin, 1957), 18e baron Dunsany, plus connu sous le nom de Lord Dunsany, fut un écrivain irlandais de fantasy.

Biographie

Lord Dunsany naquit à Londres en 1878.

Formé à Eton, puis à l'Académie royale militaire de Sandhurst, il servit dans les Coldstream Guards pendant la Seconde Guerre des Boers. Il combattit également pendant la Première Guerre mondiale. Il enseigna la littérature anglaise à l'université d'Athènes pendant la Seconde Guerre mondiale lorsque les Allemands envahirent la ville, qu'il parvint à quitter.

Lord Dunsany était un athlète, sportif et passionné de chasse. Il fut également un auteur très prolifique, puisqu'à son premier livre, The Gods of Pegana, publié en 1905, succédèrent une soixantaine de romans, plusieurs pièces et volumes de poésie, et une traduction des Odes d'Horace.

Écrivant au début du XXe siècle, Dunsany aurait exercé une influence certaine sur le développement de la littérature de fantasy. Cet auteur irlandais, suscita notamment en 1919, après une série de conférences aux États-Unis, l'admiration de H. P. Lovecraft qui le tint dès lors pour un des plus grands auteurs fantastiques et l'un de ses principaux inspirateurs. Cet explorateur, dramaturge et poète irlandais, inspira encore L. Sprague de Camp, Fletcher Pratt et l'école américaine de Sword and Sorcery. Neil Gaiman reconnaît avoir été influencé par lui pour son roman Stardust.

On retrouve déjà chez Dunsany ce qui fera partie de la « fantasy moderne », c'est-à-dire d'épiques combats (The Sword of Welleran, 1908), des histoires de passage vers d'autres mondes imaginaires, ceux-ci minutieusement construits. La Fille du Roi des Elfes, écrit en 1924, est généralement considéré comme son chef-d'œuvre. Il mourut en 1957 à Dublin.

Ses écrits sont pour l'instant très peu traduits en français (quelques romans et recueils de nouvelles seulement).

Œuvre

L'œuvre la plus connue de lord Dunsany est le roman La Fille du roi des Elfes.

  • Résumé

Sur l'ordre du roi son père, le prince Alvéric entreprend de traverser la forêt enchantée pour y découvrir et enlever la fille du roi des Elfes. Après avoir combattu les chevaliers qui défendent sa demeure, la princesse Lirazel suit volontairement le jeune prince jusqu'au royaume d'Erl, où naît Orion, leur fils. Mais le roi des Elfes, furieux, envoie vers sa fille un troll porteur d'un message magique qui la ramène près de lui. Alvéric, inconsolable, part à sa recherche, mais protégé par la magie de son roi, le domaine des Elfes est devenu introuvable. Tandis qu'Orion, qui grandit en beauté et en sagesse, apprend à connaître la forêt enchantée…
