Le Rock 'n' roll existait bien avant qu'Elvis Presley n'enregistre son premier disque le 5 juillet 1954, et le terme « rock and roll » ne fut pas inventé par Alan Freed comme le prétendent encore certains. Ensemble ou séparément, ces deux mots rock (« secouer ») et roll (« balancer ») sont employée abondamment dans les textes de chansons à partir de la fin des années 1940, souvent comme une allusion à l'acte sexuel. Les artistes de Rhythm and blues jouent sur l'ambiguité pour ne pas froisser les oreilles trop chastes (et la censure). Lorsque qu'Etta James chante Roll With Me Henry, l'auditeur peut comprendre qu'elle lui demande de se "balancer" avec elle, au choix, sur une piste de danse, ou bien dans un lit.

A partir de 1955, l'association des deux termes Rock And Roll (ou en abbrégé Rock N' Roll) désigne plutôt le style musical et la danse.
