Déclaration publique d’un sentiment habituel. Je fais profession d’être votre obligé, j’en fais une profession publique, une profession solennelle. Les sentiments dont il fait profession. Il fait profession de principes fort sévères, fort relâchés. Il fait profession publique d’athéisme. Il fait hautement profession de vous être attaché.

Faire profession d’une chose, Y mettre de la prétention, s’en piquer particulièrement. Il fait profession d’être sincère, de tenir sa parole. Il fait profession de haine et de mépris pour le genre humain. Il fait profession de bel esprit.

Faire profession d’une religion, L’exercer, la pratiquer ouvertement. On dit aussi Faire profession d’une doctrine.

Profession de foi, Formule qui contient les principes de religion auxquels on déclare publiquement adhérer. Par extension, il se dit d’un écrit où un candidat à la députation ou à quelque siège électif expose ses opinions politiques et sociales. Il signifie encore, d’une façon générale, Déclaration de principes philosophiques, sociaux, littéraires, artistiques.

PROFESSION désigne encore, en termes ecclésiastiques, l’Acte par lequel un religieux ou une religieuse fait les voeux de religion, après que le temps de son noviciat est expiré.
