Celui, celle qui s’occupe de dessin, de peinture, de sculpture, de gravure, de musique. L’art et les artistes. Un artiste peintre. Un artiste décorateur. Une grande artiste.

Il s’applique particulièrement aux Acteurs et aux Actrices. Un artiste dramatique. Une artiste de l’Opéra-Comique. La troupe des artistes du Théâtre-Français.

Par extension, il se dit de Celui ou de celle qui excelle dans son art. Cet ouvrier est un véritable artiste. Il est artiste en son genre.

Il signifie quelquefois d’une manière générale Celui qui a le sentiment et le goût des arts. Il est né artiste. En ce sens, il est pris aussi adjectivement. Un peuple artiste. Avoir une nature artiste.
