n. f.

Mouvement de l’âme par lequel on tend à quelque fin. Une intention louable. Avoir l’intention de faire quelque chose. Mon intention n’était pas de vous déplaire. Si je vous ai fait de la peine, c’est sans intention. Blessures faites volontairement, mais sans intention de donner la mort. Il faut considérer l’intention du testateur, du fondateur. Quelle a été l’intention du législateur? Il faut considérer l’intention. Dieu est juge de nos intentions. Intention secrète. Je l’ai fait dans une bonne intention. Je lui sais gré de l’intention. Je rends justice à ses intentions. La droiture, la pureté des intentions.

Faire une chose à l’intention de quelqu’un, Pour lui, à sa considération.

Faire des prières, donner des aumônes, dire la messe, etc., à l’intention de quelqu’un, Faire ces choses dans le dessein qu’elles lui servent devant Dieu. Il a dit, il a fait dire la messe à l’intention du défunt.

En termes de Dévotion, Diriger ou dresser son intention, Rapporter ses actions, ses vues à une fin déterminée. On dit dans un sens analogue Direction d’intention ou de l’intention.

Direction d’intention s’emploie plus ordinairement en parlant de Ceux qui prétendent justifier une parole ou un acte mauvais par le motif qu’ils se proposent réellement.

Prov. et fam., L’enfer est pavé de bonnes intentions, On forme beaucoup de bonnes résolutions, mais on ne les mène pas à fin.

Prov., L’intention est réputée pour le fait, Avoir voulu une chose compte autant que si on l’avait faite.

Il s’emploie aussi dans le sens de Volonté. L’intention de votre père est que vous partiez. Agir contre les intentions d’une personne. Les intentions du testateur furent scrupuleusement remplies.
