Action de fortifier une ville, une place, de la munir d’ouvrages de défense. On travaille à la fortification de la place. Projet, plan de fortification de tel point de la frontière. Cours de fortification.

Il se dit par extension de ces Ouvrages de défense. Fortification passagère. Fortification permanente. On a démoli les fortifications de la ville de Paris.
