Porter, soutenir. Ces piliers, ces colonnes supportent toute cette maison. Il n'y a qu'un seul pilier qui supporte toute la voûte.   Il signifie aussi, Souffrir, endurer. Il supporte le froid, le chaud, toutes les injures de l'air. Il a la vue si faible, qu'il ne saurait supporter l'éclat de la lumière. Il supporte son mal, son affliction patiemment. Supporter impatiemment quelque chose. Il a plus de maux, plus de mal qu'il n'en peut supporter. Il ne saurait rien supporter.   Il signifie quelquefois, Souffrir avec patience. Il y a de la charité à supporter les défauts, les infirmités de son prochain. Il ne saurait supporter l'humeur, les manières de cet homme. Les hommes doivent se supporter les uns les autres.   Il signifie aussi, Être à l'épreuve de. Ce vase peut supporter le feu. Ce navire ne supporterait pas la mer. Cet ouvrage ne supporte pas l'examen, la critique.
